So he did and I took a box of albums that he me and went went around Southeast and visit radio stations that back, then that play contemporary jazz and more jazz and they started playing the record and Seth called me back and said, you know we're starting to see some movement in Florida and I was really and David's career began to take off and I can't take credit for that.
Right and we used to talk about music all the time and he would would ask me through the magazine. I'd already launched Jazz is are there any artists that we be looking at and in fact, I there's a couple and one of them that mentioned was David He called up Dave Gruen and Dave said.
I've heard of him. I heard a lot a lot of him to course. The rest is history. David Davida Davida. I I I was was was. David David David has been in contemporary contemporary jazz jazz as as you you mentioned. We're so to see the success of David and I wanted to tell you David. I I wanted to get on today and say that to we wish you success.
That's right and say it to his face like David is here at risk of sounding like an episode of This is your life. Here's the hello. Thank you for that.
It's bringing back a lot memories. I just got a note from Seth Marsha haven't heard from many years and I'll have to let him know that I spoke with I do remember. Was one of the very early early ones that really helped to things along. Absolutely Well to have you here and again.
I'm just here to say hello and I'm gonna turn over to you and Brian. Thank you. Thanks, you're welcome. Hello Hey. We're a last call. This is really cool. No no that is strictly Okay. Keep it back there and I'll play occasionally if you need to play a G, a blues Jean doesn't go above the third position. He was totally one of the guys first got into the into the So yeah, so many us he he was just and a lot of us got exposed to jazz on that original television show in , the Charlie Brown Christmas, and I had been a Charlie Brown fan for the time.
I was eight years old, so I was following Strip to Charlie Brown and then that music came on and that was it. I That is what I wanna do. I wanna be a jazz pianist so yeah, I was just gonna say putting your musician hat now, you know as know as an established Grammy nominated recording artist. What do you think you were recognizing in vins music back? Lucy was really basically a sort of lot with the left and right hand are kinda.
Puno Yeah. I don't think he ever lissy the same twice. It's just Ric nature of it and how it felt it just got hooked from the beginning. With those peanuts cartoons so very cool, I know earlier in your career, you start kind of on the opposite end of banta.
You're doing a lot of conducting. Yeah, that was how I got my start. What was your role as a musical director for Alani Kazan well to back up a little bit. I remember rehearsal I was scared out of my wits.
I could barely mean I was 21 and you know I'll duing. That was my first job and I on the job and bless her heart and she really taught me a lot sometimes it was. I'm from Oakland be pretty tough, but we have remained absolutely lifelong friends I give her so much credit. What I what an lady cool. Oh, very nice. I know you're doing conducting you were composing for orchestra. How did you go from that to to to heavier heavier?
I'll I'll I'll tell tell tell you you. I had been recording a. Jazz a sax player named Doug Richardson and okay the producers like the the way I played and they were looking for an artist for label called A-b I so they went to a performance with Lady Kazan when I was playing for her and they really like the way way I played the first session was at night, but I thought I was gonna be in the day so day so I could do the session of the day and then play for Lenny at night.
Well, it was at night. I had to lady cuz I said. I'm not gonna be there. Double booking a classic double booking exactly what she nuts and so I called the label and they said, Look you know we'll we'll we'll have it during you know and so they made it work and it all worked out.
I know that that was was what a debut you know heavier than yesterday kinda put you on the map. Favorite records It was an record, but because you said, that's the one where things really clicked. I I mean listening to know what you meant by that because that absolutely grooves. But why was that that clicked for you for a lot of reasons the session itself was pure Jeff Baca, one of the I think one of the most brilliant drum tracks I've ever is that freedom midnight track, and that was all recorded live.
A lot of credit goes Jeffrey Webber the producer he had a lot of faith. And a lot of faith and the musicians on that day, We also had a full orchestra 45 live. It was a groundbreaking record of course, the first album for GRP. I remember first meeting playing it for Dave Bruce Bruce and I so nervous and he he. Remember that that was big deal for me so it it it really went from. So and how old are you at the time of that release?
I don't know let me see you see that was eighties. That's it yeah. I yeah. I I I was was was was like like. Yeah three So So I'm I'm So like. It's It's huge. Yeah when you were starting. Is that what envisioned success would be like Are you did you just wanna you know jazz clubs? What is is your success? Look like when just starting out? It was more like I I just what was in front of front of me I I I I I wanted to have some success and I really couldn't do anything else So cuz I dropped out school so it just getting giggs and so I think being so the process of building a career, career, you didn't have a lot of time to think about where I was be so especially when.
At midnight came out and right after I got married so that was groundbreaking event which is become my most popular most song. So it's quite a journey really really has. I'm so nervous when I have to write something. Great Balls of Fire. Word of Mouth.
